96 Catholic priests and brothers sentenced in Australian courts in Broken Rites cases
Broken Rites helps victims of church-related sexual abuse.
In one kind of case, we help some survivors to report the abuse effectively to the church's Professional Standards office ("Towards Healing"). In a second kind of case, some survivors seek our advice about instigating a civil claim against the church for personal injury. In a third kind of case, some survivors seek our help in contacting a police sexual-offences unit, so that the police can charge the offender in the criminal courts with a view to having the offender convicted and punished.
This Black Collar Crime page demonstrates our success with the third option - criminal prosecution.
Following is a Broken Rites list of 96 Catholic priests and religious brothers who have been sentenced in Australian criminal courts in recent years for sexual offences. These 96 cases were ones in which Broken Rites has helped the victims - either before the prosecution or afterwards.
This is not a comprehensive list of all sentenced offenders - it is merely those in which Broken Rites became involved.
Some other offenders slip through the courts unnoticed. And, of course, Broken Rites helps many survivors to obtain justice through civil procedures (including Towards Healing) instead of criminal proceedings.

Teachers in Catholic schools
Child sex-abuse offences have also been committed by lay teachers (as distinct from priests and brothers) in Catholic schools. When Broken Rites receives sex-abuse complaints about teachers, we tell the callers the different options available for obtaining justice -- he or she can choose to go through civil procedures (such as the Towards Healing process) or, alternatively, he/she can consult the police Child Abuse Unit (the police unit might already be interested in this particular teacher).
In addition, there are other teacher-related cases that Broken Rites does not hear about. As a result, numerous lay teachers (and even principals) in Catholic schools have been sentenced in the courts for sex offences. Some of these were teachers of the subject "religion", which indicates hypocrisy as well as crime.
We find it too difficult to keep track of all the teachers from Catholic schools who have been through the courts, so we are not including teachers in this Black Collar Crime page. However, Broken Rites is still interested in hearing from people who wish to discuss a teacher-related problem of sexual abuse.
